'Orthotics' are a prescription item made for foot and leg problems. Some people refer to them as appliances (arch) supports, plates, etc. Though superficially they resemble the unsophisticated off the shelf arch supports, they differ radically in that their role is not primarily to support the arch but to restore and maintain the correct alignment of the bones, ligaments and muscles within the foot, ankle and leg.
